Word of the Week - Pique

Yippee it's Wednesday and time for the next word to zhush up our vocabulary.
Today we will be in cahoots with creative writers visiting from Gill's fabulous blog 'ink paper pen'
If you're popping into this space for the first time today I offer you a warm welcome.  I'm sure that you're a lover of words, so be sure to have a peek at my sidebar where previous 'WoW' links are stored.

This weeks' word is one I use quite often, usually in the context of the second definition listed below which is all about provoking or arousing interest or curiosity.

Pique
A state of vexation caused by a perceived slight or indignity; a feeling of wounded pride.

1. To cause to feel resentment or indignation.
2. To provoke; arouse: The portrait piqued her curiosity.
3. To pride (oneself): He piqued himself on his stylish attire.

{Watching Curiously by Heather Murphy}

From a very early age I can recall being a bit of a snoop.
I was forever being berated by my parents and Grandparents for foraging in drawers and cupboards, unearthing 'treasures' and trying to decipher scribbly handwriting on ancient letters.
"Curiosity killed the cat you know!" was a phrase directed at me many a time.

Today my interest is often piqued when confronted with tales of our family history and genealogy and I'm also enthused by creative problem solving & clever humour.

My most recent 'find' was a lovely old timber box shoved to the very back of a cupboard in my parent's guest bedroom.  Inside were letters from my Father's great uncle written whilst in the trenches of Gallipoli.
There was also small diary, photos and newspaper clippings.
Reading through these yellowed pages, I've uncovered a great story but I will wait until Anzac day next year to share it with you.

The most wonderful thing is that my curiosity unearthed previously forgotten family history and this knowledge has enabled my parents to visit the grave of this not-so-distant relative on their recent travels through the English countryside.

So now it's over to you to try and use this word in your own writing this week.
If you do, please be sure to link back to this post, adding the WoW banner, directing your own readers to learn more about zhushing their vocabulary.

If you are interested to find out more about creative writing and partake in a fast & fun challenge, be sure to pop on over to Gill's space, it will take a maximum of five minutes and I bet you'll be hooked once you start!

  2. How wonderfully creative! You are all so much more talented than I. I learn all these new words here but then I forget them :)

I will say my interest was piqued by the reference to Anzac day. I have no idea what that is!
