It's that time of the week again when we zhush our vocabulary together.
Today I've chosen a word that I seem to be using more frequently than I used to, usually in a bit of a dismissive tone ie: that was a whole heap of palaver.
The interesting thing is, that I wasn't aware of the variety of definitions that this word has and I'm most interested to know how you would use it. Have a read through the following meanings and tell me which definition resonates with you: Palaver [puh-lav-er, ‐lah-ver] noun, verb, -ered, -er·ing. — n | |
| 1. | tedious or time-consuming business, esp when of a formalnature: all the palaver of filling in forms |
| 2. | loud and confused talk and activity; hubbub |
| 3. | (often used humorously) a conference |
| 4. | rare talk intended to flatter or persuade |
| 5. | ( W African ) |
| a. an argument | |
| b. trouble arising from an argument | |
| — vb | |
| 6. | ( intr ) (often used humorously) to have a conference |
| 7. | ( intr ) to talk loudly and confusedly |
| 8. | ( tr ) to flatter or cajole |
| [C18: from Portuguese palavra talk, from Latin parabola If you love today's image as much as I do, you'll be pleased to learn that it's by the talented New Hampshire artist Matt Stephens. Click on over for a rendezvous with fabulousness at his Etsy store. | |

I would probably use it the same as you because my time is very precious to me. I absolutely do like that print. It goes well with #2.
ReplyDeleteGreat wo
ReplyDeleteThis is my Dad's f-a-v-o-u-r-i-t-e word, especially when we were growing up and 'what's all this palaver about'. Ahh, thanks for the reminder...
ReplyDeleteThe image is quite fun, but I cannot see me using palaver anytime soon in my daily conversation, LOL! Go Felicity, you wordy girl!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great word! :)
ReplyDeleteLove the word, and I'm going to try and use it three times today. That means I might actually remember it for other times. We'll see..!
ReplyDeleteLovely to stop by your place. I must do so more often!
xx
Oh I love this word! We used to say it all the time in our early twenties! In fact I had a friend with outrageous red hair who was very well known for saying Palaver all the time..."What a palaver!"
ReplyDeleteThanks for the trip down memory lane

Hello,
ReplyDeletewe use the word *Palaver* in German too.

Greetings from Germany!

Ooh, a favourite sparkler of mine, Felicity. I tend to use it in the #1 sense. The French word parler (to speak) must also be related. J x
ReplyDeleteHi Felicity..the second on the list in the nouns section resonates with me...all this talk about the word palaver..I would say 'what a palaver'..like a lot of hubbub and activity about this word!
ReplyDeleteone of my favourites! If something was tricksy (say, getting 3 unruly boys out the house on time) I would say
ReplyDelete'what a (flamin') palava' (realise I also spell it wrong)
it's right up there for me with shennanigans and willynilly as a regular utterence....
happy week
love the art

ps it's one of Cleggys faves too - he probably uses it daily in his gorgeous goerdie accent!
So many meanings...I have heard it often in a dismissive way so far...funny is it!
ReplyDeleteI, my dear felicity, am the absolute master of spurting out all kinds of palaver! :) (No.7)
ReplyDeleteLove this word. Never heard of it before and it so needs to be used in my home. So many choices of when I could use it. Cannot wait to see the faces of my cherubs when I throw this word at them :) N x
