{Warning! This post contains images which may frighten anyone who is is scared of slitherin'.}
{This of course is not a slitherin' but the fourth 'Gift' in our family, Luke the Frankendog}
This is the tale of a two seconds of pure luck.
It all began with a head snapping double take.
I was moving from my office to the downstairs entertainment room when my eye was caught by what I thought was our dog Luke in the nextdoor neighbour's yard.
We live on acreage but with very open fencing [read here posts and two wire runners top and bottom], which isn't a problem as Luke is exceptionally well trained and only leaves the perimeter of the house when he accompanies me on his twice-daily walks.
The animal that I'd spied was in fact a mini-pony. Our neighbours must have just acquired her as she was happily munching away in their front yard.
I'm sure that you can see why I was so surprised.
Same colour.
Same boofy head.
Same thickset body.
Same short legs.
....well the tail may be a little longer, but I hope you get my drift. Still need some convincing?
Here's Luke...
The new neighbour...
Luke bored, leaving the story...
Fascinated, I wanted to investigate closer and grabbed my camera thinking I would try and get a shot with Luke and the new neighbour together to share with you.
Moving from the downstairs entertaining area, I was about to proceed past the hedge that surrounds the lower half of our house when I was stopped by a movement in front of me....
I froze.
Swore.
Then the adrenalin kicked in and I unfroze, called Luke, secured him away from the slitherin' then ran to the upstairs verandah so that I could take this photo.
Seriously these guys give me the heebies and I was very close to stepping on it [my third close encounter in as many months]. The first I wrote about here, the second happened when I was cleaning out our back shed.
That time I only got to see a recently shed skin and some poop beneath a box I had just moved.
Back to the story...I took a few more photos to help Captain V and I identify it {I'm actually at a bit of a loss even after looking at our local 'Snakecatcher's' website}...
{I'm secretly loving the zoom on my camera Nikon Coolpix P80 - there's no way I would get a photo this close to a snake without a zoom lens!}
...after snapping away for a minute or two, it slithered away from the house and I could breathe a sight of relief. Turning to go inside I saw this....
One of the many kookaburras who live around our yard - snoozing on the job just metres away from the action! Obviously life's good for him at the moment because this guy missed a huge snake steak!
So how about that for lucky? If I'd been a second or two earlier or if the snake hadn't moved when it did, it may have been an entirely different outcome altogether.
As for the new neighbour and Luke, they have yet to make each others acquaintance.

eek! we get them here as well, couple venemous ones too. i've yet to come face to face with a big guy though.... and hope it remains that way!
ReplyDeleteGreat story. I have never seen a snake in real life and I hope I never do. Awww the kookaburra, my favourite. I had one laughing at me this morning on my walk.
ReplyDeleteYour doggie is lovely! I really enjoyed your wonderful photos and your delightful post.
ReplyDeleteSometimes timing is everything.
:)
Ahhhhh! snakes are so not my favourite animal. I hope you were wearing your boots! love the rest of the post. N x
ReplyDeleteLoving this Sunday special! Felicity it seems you have quite a mixed meneagerie going on there at you acerage. I see the similarities between the pony and the gorgeous Luke. and the snake....eeeek!
ReplyDeleteHope you are having a lovely weekend.
Kellie xox
Ah Luke, I bet he loves a deep chest rub and a bit of your morning toast.
ReplyDeleteSomeone is very lucky with that sweet pony. Probably has the appetite to match Luke's.
Met a few snaes and yes have a healthy respect for them.
Sometimes a bit torn about Kookaburras. They certainly are king of the bush.
xx
Too funny about dog vs. horse!
ReplyDeleteI was picking strawberries last month and stuck my hand right at a snake. Definitely got my heart rate up!
Oh my, cute Mr. Snake ;)
ReplyDeleteI love your boots in your previous post, Fizz!
Have a happy merry lovely weekend sweet friend.
We are celebrating Bresten turning 7 by spending a night on the SS Rotterdam, a cruise ship. It is a hotel these days. I have planned to sit on the deck and do nothing nothing nothing. Will instruct Mark to take the little monkeys on a tour guide ;)
Love to you o xx o
Oh Felicity you met one of my friends!
ReplyDeleteI don't recognise what type he is either so I've asked a friend if he knows, Mr Hat isn't sure either, he said maybe an Olive Python. Whatever he is, he ate recently! And he should be hibernating soon so I doubt you'll see many more soon.
Glad to see you're back and I'm enjoying your gifts
x
Oh, horrors, F! I'm still getting over your last encounter. You poor darling. J x
ReplyDeleteFF would call that a 'dasterdly varmint' wouldn't she? Pony/ dog/ pony - easily mistaken identity. Glad you didn't step on the beastie and get munched. Darn that kookaburra for sleeping on the job. I have a snake bite kit...
ReplyDeleteOh thank goodness for peripheral vision!! That would have been me with a laundry basket & no clue what was in front of me, shudder. Brown snakes are the ones who scare me, their bite feels like a scratch & often goes unnoticed until your system starts to shut down. Yikes!! I'm clumsy enough. When we move onto the farm, i'm getting geese, they keep snakes at bay, who'd of thought geese were useful??
ReplyDeleteSo much for action kookaburra & lucky puppy was safe. As for the new pony, adorable!! Love Posie
oh, your dog is snoozing on the job - along with that kookaburra! they BOTH should have been pouncing on that snake for you! :) several of our dogs here are great snake killers. we have a couple of venomous varieties here and they've killed plenty of them to keep our property safer.
ReplyDeletei LOVE your new neighbor! what a sweet looking tiny horse!!!
Ah man, such a cute kookaburra! Tuff to see everything well on my Blackberry so I will have to catch up when I get home.
ReplyDeleteEeeek! I hope you had your gorgeous new wellies on! Love that your neighbours have a pony, my two would be beside themselves with joy at the discovery of a pony in the neighbour's garden! x
ReplyDeleteWe see quite a few snakes around here, and they never cease to un-nerve me.
ReplyDeleteI think I'm in love with Luke though, what a handsome old gent.
Oh no!!Thanks goodness for those couples of seconds Felicity! I used to fear those encounters before...I hope they will be less common over here!
ReplyDeletex
GAH!
ReplyDelete(hang on, one more time)...
GAH!
Can't BELIEVE those kookaburras are napping on the job. I am so pleased you are peripherally talented.
Crickey - you have been lucky
ReplyDeleteOh yuck! They freak me out! You are so lucky so is Luke xox
ReplyDeleteWow... so in just a few minutes you were able to get a close up of the snake and the bird! Your dog is so sweet and I hope that snake is gone for good!
ReplyDeleteWhat a riveting story with a twist! I'm not a snake fan at all - of snakes or mice - how I would have screamed and squealed! But I love your new shaggy new neighbor :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for joining Post Of The Month Club! XOL
Yowzer, not sure
ReplyDeleteI could live this
close to the slitherins,
as you call them!!
But I would like the
proximity to the mini
pony and sweet doggies
like your Luke. Thanks
for sharing this post
with me, Felicity!
xx Suzanne
