Quixotic[adjective] Absurdly chivalrous, idealistic, or impractical.Impulsive, unpredictable.
[Pronunciation] kwik-SOT-ic
The word quixotic derives from a novel by the seventeenth century author Miguel de Cervantes.
The eponymous tome 'Don Quixote', is about a middle-aged gentleman who decides to go on a series of well-intentioned but misguided quests of chivalry.
These images are obviously not Don Quixote but a quixotic character I have been reading about lately.
Do you notice any connection with yesterday's post perchance? Yep, I'm in a bit of a Frida Kahlo frenzy.
These images are painted by Canadian artist Tascha and for me, perfectly capture the quixotic elements of Frida's colourful personality. After you've read this post I'd encourage you to visit Tascha's store.
So what's the connection with Frida?
Well, it's tenuous at best but it lies in the letter 'x'.
Both Cervantes, Quixote and Kahlo are of Latin heritage, Spanish being the language that unites them all.
The letter 'X' is prevalent in many Spanish words particularly in Frida's homeland Mexico.
As for the word's meaning well I think Frida was more than a little quixotic.
Was she unpredictable? Yes!
Impulsive, impractical and idealistic? Without a doubt.
Was there a heart of goodness beneath the bravado? I think so.
How about you? Is there someone in your world who exemplifies this word?
Someone who, although they have a heart of gold, is truly challenging because of their impulsivity or idealistic impracticality? I look forward to hearing your responses to this week's word.

Would that be pronounced kee-o-tic? Like Don Quixote? Might just have to practice this one today... Thanks
ReplyDeleteThese paintings are pure happiness. The vibrant colors and sweet girls, i adore her style. I was wondering too how to pronounce your great word of the week.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful Wednesday, Fizz, I am still enjoying my Tuesday evening xxxx
I have never spoken this word, but I have read it and written it. It is strong and charming and conjures up a tall, dark stranger helping a damsel in distress for me. Like the other commenters before me, I wonder how it is pronounced. I think Just Martha is on the money?
ReplyDeleteI like this word, new to me but I like it.
ReplyDeleteThe paintings also, they are like happy little girl Frida :)
I'm not sure I know anyone who fits this word. I'm afraid if I just said impulsive and a bit impractical, my husband might say me but I'm not really chivalrous. He is chivalrous but not even close to impulsive, perhaps together we are quixotic!
I love these cute paintings of Frida!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for featuring my paintings! Great post.
ReplyDeleteCheers!
Oh, wow - how utterly serendipitous! :)
ReplyDeleteI found this wonderful, whimsical comic yesterday and was desperate to share it with someone, and now there's someone actually asking for responses to the word "quixotic" - I simply can't believe it! Go and look, and be amazed!
definitely my little snowbear! Means so well - but her ideas are always so OTT (especially her 'costume' designs for all her 'plays' that she is constantly planning in her head!!).
ReplyDeleteSo sweet...but so quixotic!!
xxxCate
Ah, Quicksilver Sam is the very definition of 'quixotic', sweet Felicity. Especially the 'impulsive and unpredictable' part! J x
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing a new word, I need as much help as I can in that area :) I am pretty shure that "Don Quichotte" wasn't spelt with a x when I learnt about it...But word's spelling get changed according to the country...confusing sometimes :)A friend of me did a whole art exhibition about donquichotte was very interesting.Sorry I divert from Frida :)
ReplyDeleteHave a nice evening x
Those pieces are so beautiful and happy. I love the new word too:) Thank you so much for your amazing words:) Made my day:)
ReplyDeleteKisses and have a lovely day
Ps: I’m hosting a charming jewelry GIVEAWAY today! Hope you’ll join in:)
I'm too idealistic, sometimes impulsive, occasionally unpredictable, almost never impractical. I guess that doesn't make me quixotic. hehehh.
ReplyDeleteGreat to read your comments gorgeous girls - it seems that some of us have an element of the quixotic within us which is nice to know...I think.
ReplyDeleteIf you haven't already done so, the link in Lesley Deysel's comment takes you to a comic which is SO perfect for today's post...Don Quixote rides again! Thanks for sharing Lesley!
xx to all & remember to pack your bags, we're zipping off to Hong Kong on Friday!
love the images Felicity - so bright and fun. This word immediately made me think of my Harmony. She really has a heart of gold but boy does she come up with some crazy ideas and make life difficult for us with her wishes and desires. Some mornings I am scared for her to wake up to see what adventure she wants to take! looking forward to Hong Kong! N x
ReplyDeleteHmm, I wonder whether there is any linguistic connection between Quixotic and Chaotic...
ReplyDeleteImpulsive, Impractical....all sounds like potential for chaos.
I would like to think we all have the potential for a little quixotic part to our nature..I know I do.
p.s love the images. a lot more joyful than Frida's. Hers always seem a bit more heavy with her own complexity.
ReplyDeleteOh, I definitely have a few close friends around who could be described this way. I love them dearly. There can be trying times with them but certainly not boring ones!
ReplyDeleteEqually excited you spelt zhush for me too!! Fabulous word, i can imagine my husband having been Quixotic while we were dating, you know, like driving 200km just for a kiss goodnight, the things he'd do while stuck on Army exercises bless his heart. I could have married him for effort alone. Now we're grown up & 'practical' it doesn't really happen. Looking forward to an Quixotic middle age. Love Posie
