Sagacity
[n] foresight, discernment, keen perception, or wisdom.
The ability to make good judgements.
Sagacity - A Poem
Despair to my mother was I in my youth,
For I was considered inept and uncouth;
Unkempt and unruly
Was infant Yours Truly.
Throughout tempestuous puberty
She battled my uncoutherty,
And with a stern unfoolishness
Coped with my unrulishness.
My mother (flushed with her success)
Then tackled my unkemptiness
And with relentless recitude
Conquered my ineptitude.
How well my mother schooled me,
How well my mother fooled me,
At last I've discovered the terrible truth -
It's no fun being ept, kempt, ruly or couth.

So there is this week's word - sagacity, I can't wait to learn how you use it!
PS: Did you ever get a look like the one in the illustration from your own mother?
It's fantastic isn't it? Drawn by the talented Len Dickson and available to purchase in his Etsy store.
Looking into those eyes, I think that it could be subtitled 'Withering Wisdom'.

PS I've just woken in the early hours with the following clumsy ditty rolling through my mind, it might help you to remember the meaning of the word....
ReplyDeleteThe elephant - saggy ass has he,
Is large and strong and wise.
The human - their wisdom to see?
Look deep into their eyes.
Anyhoo, I hope you enjoy playing with the word this week! x F
Sagacity - I like it! And that poem. There are such clever people in this world. Your reading list is coming along nicely...
ReplyDeleteThanks for always posting such lovely comments on my blog Felicity! I shall endeavour to use sagacity at least once this week... my husband already thinks I use superfluous language, I can't wait for the raised eyebrows this will cause!

ReplyDeleteGood point Shelle,
ReplyDeleteOther lovely Gifters have made this same comment - perhaps I should embed a little pronunciation icon so that we're all sure to be speaking the same language!

I so love the owl look - I have to say over my teenage years I received more than my fair share of those eyes directed towards me.
ReplyDeleteNow that I am a mother, I find myself giving the same look , and laughing at myself because of it.
Love the word - my wish is that my children can learn from a young age to have such wisdom and be able to make good judgement with friends and life decisions.
I also need a little more sagacity in my life.

Another fab word, Felicity. I've never used it before - only heard of the yacht 'Sagacious' which used to sail in the Sydney-Hobart. I'll put my thinking cap on. And yes, that withering look brings back many memories ☺. J x
ReplyDeleteOh it's a great word, my husband has enough foresight for both of us, thankfully. I tend to prevent drama & mistakes & bad things from happening, i only gained common sense AFTER becoming a mother!! Love Posie
ReplyDeleteJust discovered your gem of a blog. Wonderfully novel, with a clever mix of word-smithing and artwork of various types.
