Word Of The Week - Evanescent

Do you feel like your vocabulary could do with a little zhushing?  Then this is the space for you!
Each week I will unearth a new word to play with.  If you would like to join in, write a post incorporating this week's word, then come back and leave a comment with your link so what we can all read your work.
To make it easy for us to find your WW entry, incorporate the button into your post.

........................................................

Evanescent
[adj] Fleeting, ephemeral, momentary or transitory.
Fading away quickly. Vanishing or likely to vanish like vapour.
Barely there, almost imperceptible.

This beautiful word has delighted me many times of late. Whether written in a novel, evoked whilst reading your poignant posts or as I watched the bright moon fade behind a cloud the other night, it aptly describes the fleeting nature of life in its many forms.

I hope that it resonates with you too, perhaps you may use it in your own writing.

Before you write your comment today I'd like to you consider this. I know that there are many 'Gifters' who delight in words and enjoy playing with them in their various shapes and forms.  If this sounds like you and you think you would be interested in hosting a 'Word Of The Week' segment I'd be delighted to hand over the reigns for a week. Send me an email and we'll chat about a date for publication.

Until Friday, keep your eyes and ears open for evanescent moments,

  1. I love this word...although I don't care for the band too much, Evanessence really brought this word back to the forefront of our American vocabularies with their success.

Oh wow, I really am a luddite! I hadn't heard of this band before - so glad you could get past that and you enjoy today's word.

What a wonderful way to describe butterfly wings and I love that you're sharing the 'big' words with your children - many people shy away from doing this but I've always found that kids love big words especially if there's some musicality to the word.

You're not alone is using words incorrectly, Capt. V picked me up on something last week I can't remember exactly [pride and all that] but I think it was mixing brevity and levity - oops!.
I think I may have confused evanessence with effervescence in the past too.

I hope that you use it and 'spread the word' so that others may adore it too!

  6. I must admit that I first heard of this word because of Evanescence, the rock band. This is not part of my everyday language but thanks to you, I am now in love with this word.

  11. It was hard to choose a word for this week in light of what's been happened in Christchurch, I had hoped not to offend anyone but make us stop and think how precious life is, perhaps you did.

  12. love this word and I just adore that image! simply gorgeous!

made me think of how I am going in my life - am I barely there, almost imperceptible with my kids at the moment - am I in the moment with them and really there in my thoughts and attention or am I doing too much blogging!

sorry, I have to always relate everything to motherhood!

love that it gave me a new pondering moment.
    big hugs to you

Each new comment is a gift - unexpected and lovely.
Although I'd love to reply to each and every one, this isn't always possible, but know that I read and appreciate them all.
